Lot No. 94

Bernardo Strozzi

(Genoa 1581 - Venezia 1644) and an unknown Tuscan painter active in the early 17th Century, A large table with a still life and a female figure, oil on canvas 131 x 174 cm, framed

Exhibition: Munich, Kunsthalle der Hypo-Cultural Fondation `Natura Morta Italiana tra Cinquecento e Settecento´, 6 December 2002 - 23 February 2003, p. 304;

Literature: M. Gregori, Natura Morta Italiana tra Cinquecento e Settecento, exhibition catalogue, Milan 2002, p. 304;

The present painting is a collaborative composition by two artists. Anna Orlando has identified the hand of Bernardo Strozzi in the figure of a young woman and in the burst of sunflowers in the opposite corner, elements of the painting which are painted with great freedom. Orlando has suggested a probable dating to circa 1615. The still life is by the hand of an as yet unidentified artist. It seems likely that the artist is not Genoese, or one of the visiting artists from Flanders in 17th Century Genoa, but most probably Tuscan.
